In contrast to later depictions of this theme, Altdorfer has chosen to show not the moment when the two elders of Babylon intrude on the beautiful wife of the wealthy Joachim (Daniel 13), but the time following it. The men are shown on the left as they are watching Susanna (right); in front of the palace the subsequent stoning of the two is depicted - the punishment for their indecent act. The edifice is a visionary masterpiece. A sketch of the work exists in Düsseldorf.
