According to tradition, Catherine, the daughter of a king, was martyred at the hands of Emperor Maxentius. Three angels carried her to Mount Sinai; here they are placing her in a coffin. The line of blood on her neck and the sword on the ground are references to her beheading, the wheel to her martyrdom from which Catherine was rescued by divine intervention. The composition and the motif of one of the putti are based on earlier prints; the painting itself however has a harmony and intensity in terms of colouring of its very own.
