The three panels (see inv. no. 643 and 5295) are part of an altarpiece comprising a sequence of seven scenes from the life of Jesus that were originally painted on one board. This unconventional, elongated type of altarpiece (dossale) is rarely found in Florence but was common in the Emilia Romagna region. Details in the images themselves and the choice of subject matter speak for Rimini as the place of origin, where evidence exists that Giotto was commissioned by the Malatesta family to produce works for the church of San Francesco. His spatially structured compositions and three-dimensionally depicted figures with their differentiated gestures and emotions mark a revolutionary innovation in Giotto’s pictorial language.
