Wilkie's genre paintings owe their comic appeal to the gestures and facial expressions of the figures. Taking his cue from Dutch and Flemish painting, he studied people and places in his immediate environment and eventually acquired an international reputation. This painting was commissioned in 1820 by King Maximilian I Joseph of Bavaria.
