Duchess Magdalena of Bavaria (1587–1628) is said to have worn flaming red in anticipation of her bridegroom Duke Wolfgang Wilhelm of Palatinate-Neuburg (1578–1653), in Munich in November 1613. Peter Candid shows the bride in a festive, official red velvet robe, richly embroidered and embellished with gold enamel, precious stones, border trimming, and metal braids and adorned with numerous precious objects. Over this she wears a high ruff of the finest lace and a magnificent coronet on her towering hair.
