Rübezahl was a mountain spirit thought to inhabit the forests of the Riesengebirge. Though capricious and impetuous, he helped those who fell into difficulty through no fault of their own. Johann Karl August Musäus¿s anthology Volksmährchen der Deutschen (Fairytales of the Germans) spread knowledge of this figure of Silesian legend throughout the German-speaking world.
