This full-face depiction of Christ looking directly at the viewer formally derives from icons of Christ and corresponds to the vera icon style of picture showing the imprint of Christ’s face on the sudarium of St Veronica. Stylistically, Bissolo’s work is orientated on that of Giovanni Bellini, who was active in Venice, and, as evidence proves, with whom he worked.
