Neureuther made a name for himself as an illustrator of writings by Goethe, work that met with the author's approval. The verse epic Hermann and Dorothea describes in German hexameters a crucial day in the life of Herrmann, a young man of burgher stock. Combining classical form with a subject rooted in middle-class ideals, the epic was one of Goethe's most widely read works in the nineteenth century. Neureuther's painting shows the encounter between Herrmann and his mother under a pear tree in the family vineyard.
