This view of Taormina and Mount Etna combines the awe-inspiring natural scenery of Sicily with the remains of ancient Greek colonisation, which began on the island¿s eastern shore. Goethe read Homer while in Taormina and was convinced that `there can be no better commentary on the Odyssey than this vital environment¿. The painting is sketch-like and was executed swiftly, but is unlikely to have been painted on the spot. Catel made a great success of selling such visual mementoes to travellers.
