A stand of trees forms the background to an artistically arranged still life of a day’s kill which includes a swan whose wing has been fixed to a branch. The white feathering is opened out to great effect and the dead bird’s long neck traces an elegant curve. The composition picks up on paintings by Jan Fyt for whom Boel worked as an apprentice. The depiction of the animals, however—in this case, dogs—is still rather stiff. After settling in Paris in 1668, he honed his skills as an animal painter. His work had an enduring influence on French still life painting.
