The central panel shows the moment after Christ is taken down from the cross; in the background the Entombment can be seen. The donor on the left-hand wing, Stephan Vell von Wevelinghoven (d. 1532), was dean and later provost in the monastery church of St Cunibert in Cologne; his nephew, Bernhard von Huchtenbroich (d. 1521), probably the figure on the right-hand wing, a canon in Xanten. The exterior panel paintings that have since been removed are now in the museum’s depot; two static wings are in St Cunibert’s. The sharp modelling and treatment of light reveal the influence of the Netherlandish Romanist Jan van Scorel in the ‘Lamentation’ altarpiece.
