Der Traum der Rezia

Der Traum der Rezia

More about this artwork
In 1836 Neureuther decorated a room in the Königsbau tract of the Munich Residenz with paintings on subjects taken from Christoph Martin Wieland¿s verse epic Oberon (1780). The picture in the Schack-Galerie is based on a design he had produced for that cycle. It illustrates lines from the Fifth Canto: `Sie schlummert ein, und, ihren Muth zu stützen, / Webt Oberon ein neues Traumgesicht / Vor ihre Stirne. Sie glaubt, bey Mondeslicht, / In einer Laube der Gärten des Harems zu sitzen, / In Fantasieen der Liebe versenkt¿ (She falls asleep, and, to lend her courage, Oberon weaves a new vision before her brow. She imagines herself sitting in a moonlit arbour in the harem gardens, lost in fantasies of love). Oberon, king of the elves, was a popular figure in late medieval folk literature and later became famed as a character in Shakespeare¿s Midsummer Night¿s Dream.
