The original picture was one of a series of portraits that Tintoretto painted of the Venetian republic’s procurators. Antonio Cappello (1494–1565), elected to this honorary office in 1523, administered the possessions of the basilica of San Marco and acted as the republic’s ambassador at various courts throughout Europe.
