For Gainsborough the chief goal of portraiture lay in reproducing as natural a likeness as possible. Hence he liked to paint his sitters in apparently casual poses, in contemporary dress and in realistic surroundings. This example shows his friend the collector and draughtsman Uvedale Tomkyns Price.
