The sculptural effect of this portrait culminates in the gesturing hand that reaches out of the picture, lending the painting a forward-looking modernity. The sophisticated use of light intensifies the element of surprise. The physical presence of this unknown figure is enhanced by the cropping of the image on the sides. Frontality is seldom found in portraiture and was avoided by artists due to perspectival difficulties. The attribution of the painting has not been verified.
