As St Jerome, one of the four Great Church Fathers, lived as a hermit for some time, he is generally depicted as an ascetic. The books and inkpot refer to his role as a translator of the bible; the skull and hour glass to the transience of time. According to one legend, Jerome healed an injured lion that, from then on, guarded his donkey. Both animals can be seen on the left of the painting.
