The ‘Adoration of the Magi’ is probably one of the most frequently depicted scenes in Antwerp Mannerism. It is presumed that the benefactors, often widely travelled merchants, may have had a close affinity with those who had journeyed from the Orient. The unknown artist modelled this work on a painting by Jan de Beer that has since been lost. The left-hand wing shows the ‘Birth of Christ’ as an atmospheric nocturnal scene; the right-hand wing depicts the ‘Flight into Egypt’.
