Characteristic of early 17th-century sumptuous still lifes are the high viewpoint and the carefully arranged juxtaposition of precious vessels and exquisite delicacies which are united on a table richly set with oriental cloth and fine damask to create a magnificent display of culinary delights. Because of its parallels with Antwerp painting of the time, this work has been attributed to Clara Peeters (1588/89–1636). Both the arrangement and the choice of objects are, however, also closely related to still lifes painted in Haarlem at the same time.
