The last picture in this series, that was conceived and executed by Tintoretto’s son Domenico, consciously links up with the first painting in this cycle. It shows the visit of the later King Philip II of Spain to Mantua in 1549—a considerable honour for the House of Gonzaga. The Spanish infante, riding under a baldachin, is received by Francesco III Gonzaga. As the son of Francesco II and the brother of the person who commissioned this work both died young, this visit remained the most important event of his reign.
