Fyt, who specialised in hunting pieces, often added the day’s kill or animal motifs to his pronkstilleven—the ‘ostentatious’ style of still life painting. The country seat in the background alludes to the purpose of such still lifes that were frequently hung in the dining rooms of wealthy clients. A reference to the five senses is possibly hidden in this work—as the instruments could stand for hearing, flowers for smell, fruit for taste, the reflecting cup for sight and the cat for feeling.
