Salvator Rosa, who was from Naples, is con­sid­ered one of the most extravagant artists of his time. His predilection for existential topics marks this still life too. The book, the sheet of music, the palette and brushes and the female torso symbolise the arts, the transience of which is underlined by the skull and the urn.
