This magnificent arrangement has a double meaning: the monkey that is sampling different pieces of fruit at random alludes to surrendering oneself to desire. The message is a reference to the couple in the background. The fig being proffered by the market woman symbolises the female sex and the hare held by the young man is considered especially fertile. Proverbially speaking, the expression de haas jagen (hunting the hare) stands for intercourse. Seducibility through the senses is, in addition, embodied by the snuffling dog.
