A hermit has set himself up in the seclusion of a wild rocky landscape. A deer, attracted by the civilising power of music, is listening to him playing the violin. Summer flowers and vegetables are growing in a small enclosed garden. The setting owes much to the `intimate landscapes¿ of French artists. Leading an existence outside society, hermits were a popular subject with Spitzweg, Schwind and other Romantic painters.
