The painting shows a view looking south-east from the Chigi park, near Ariccia, across the Pontine marshes to the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea. On the horizon the Monte Circeo appears to be emerging from the sea amid the haze. According to legend, this was the seat of the magician Circe and the landscape thus evokes the world of Homer and his Odyssey. The ruined temple built in the Tuscan order on the left is an invention of the artist.
