Two young boys are sitting in a sheltered corner gourging themselves on ripe fruit. The influence of Velázquez’s kitchen scenes can still be felt in the bold contrast of light and dark. This painting is one of Murillo’s earliest profane depictions of children, most of which are now located outside of Spain. Over the centuries, five of Murillo’s pictures of children have found their way into the holdings of the Bavarian State Painting Collections, forming a unique group of works here. This picture was acquired by the Elector Max Emanuel in Antwerp.
