This winged altarpiece shows St. John's vision at Patmos, the mystery of Revelation (Apocalypse). St. Erasmus is depicted on the left wing and St. Martin on the right. A fancifully arranged, tropical landscape stretches over all three panels. Burgkmair's familiarity with the vegetation probably stems from various printed works of the time or perhaps from the Fugger gardens. During the early 17th century the retable was partially altered; several of these changes are covered by the broad frame. Erasmus' garment and the apparition of the Virgin were repainted.
