A number of allusions to Christ’s suffering, to Mary as the Queen of Heaven and the Holy Trinity condense this domestic idyll into a complex theological agenda. The attribution of this painting to Lochner is disputed. Alternatives (such as the Master of the Glorification of the Virgin), however, have not been proven either. The angels in particular are closer to Lochner’s style than that of any anonymous artist.
