Numerous motifs symbolise marital love in this painting, the fruit of which—the children—are grouped around a basket of produce. The pergola stands for the Garden of Love; the dog is the embodiment of faithfulness. The cluster of grapes held by the boy is not just an allusion to fertility. As an especially delicate fruit it should only be touched with care; it symbolises chastity, bodily love being reserved for the bond of matrimony. The red chalk drawing held by the boy on the left could stand for the children learning together.
