As a Catholic, the little-known Engelhard de Pee (1540–1605) from the Southern Netherlands sought refuge in Swabia around 1570. In 1578 he started working in Munich, where he was admitted to the painters’ guild in 1601, with this work as his masterpiece. The self-portrait shows the painter at work on a devotional picture. De Pee confidently presents himself in the role of Luke the Evangelist, titular patron saint of most painters’ guilds, who had purportedly painted the Virgin and the Infant from life.
