Titian painted this figure with his serious, noble expression, as a knee-length portrait—an especially dignified format. The fur, the heavy gold chain, the red cross of the Order of Santiago, the sword and the baton demonstrate status and political prominence. It may possibly be Pedro Álvarez de Toledo (c. 1480 – 1553) who was the Spanish Viceroy of Naples from 1532 until 1553. Due to the discrepancy between the age given on the picture and the date favoured by research the identification of the figure, however, remains contentious.
