The tragic end of the love story between Venus and Adonis is imminent. The goddess of love is still trying to hold Adonis back from going off to hunt, but he has already picked up a spike to seek his good fortune. Shortly afterwards, he is mortally wounded by a boar goaded by the jealous god of war, Mars. Goltzius’s depiction of the lovers is one of the major early Dutch Classicist paintings that drew on the work of Peter Paul Rubens, among others, for its inspiration.
