This tavern scene is a tour de force by one of the idiosyncratic masters of 17th century Dutch art. In a well-balanced composition painted in subtle shades of grey-brown, Sweerts has depicted a small group of drinkers and smokers in a cellar tavern. The subdued mood, expressed through the poised inactivity of the figures, is characteristic for this painter. The scene provides a strong contrast to the countless humorous tavern tableaus of the time, as the riotous activity of the carousers always gives rise to a moralizing interpretation.
