Rottmann is best known for his cycles of paintings featuring Italian and Greek landscapes, yet his early work was dominated by scenes in the Bavarian Alps. This picture, produced the year before Rottmann first travelled to Italy, shows a view of the lake named after nearby Kochel, with the Herzogstand and Heimgarten mountains in the background.
