Stange mainly painted pictures of Venice, but he also produced several versions of The Evening Bell (one of which was acquired by King Ludwig I of Bavaria for the Neue Pinakothek in Munich). The view from a tower window of a red sky at sunset is strikingly atmospheric. It is also rich in meaning: ringing in the evening, the bell is a metaphorical reminder of the transience of all earthly things.
