Schack was among Giovanni Bellini’s earliest modern admirers. Of the San Zaccaria altarpiece, the principal work of the artist’s late period, he wrote: ‘Profundity, nobility and seriousness of conception, a supreme sense of style and the noblest feeling for form put this grand work on the highest level in the entire realm of art.’ He ranked Wolf’s copy of this masterwork of Venetian painting among the greatest treasures in his collection.
