In contrast to comparable, colourful scenes of winter amusements in Flemish tradition, in which people are shown enjoying themselves on the ice, Ruisdael uses a limited palette to capture the bitterly cold, bleak, and forbidding atmosphere of a virtually deserted village on a frozen river.
