Comparison with Rembrandt’s depiction of this subject (inv. no. 396) reveals an artistic antithesis. Van der Werff’s unblemished, ivory-coloured, idealised figure is in stark contrast to Rembrandt’s dramatically staged painting of Christ’s flayed corpse.
