This is one of the few religious paintings in Schack's collection. It shows the Christian martyr St John Nepomuk, a priest who was tortured by King Wenceslas IV of Bohemia over matters of church policy. The king finally had him gagged and thrown into the Vlatava from Charles Bridge in Prague. Führich depicts the discovery of his body at the riverside.
