In his early work Brueghel frequently combined the Netherlandish pictorial tradition with Italian motifs. As a result, the waterfall here is reminiscent of the cascades at Tivoli. Rottenhammer painted the figure of the saint dedicating himself to his spiritual studies in solitude in the wood.
