Philippe was proclaimed king of Spain in November 1700 and became Felipe V, setting off the War of the Spanish Succession. Vivien's portrait shows the prince before this turning point in his life, in the same military context as his father and his brothers, holding the commander's baton and wearing the sash of the Order of the Holy Spirit as well as the corresponding star.
