Pietro da Cortona, who was active not only as a painter but also as an architect, maintained one of the leading artistic workshops in Rome. The devotional picture, commissioned by Cardinal Antonio Barberini as early as 1639, is painted on copper. It interprets the Holy Family's rest as an idyllic scene with an angel offering fruit to the Christ Child.
