Above the cloth canopy, Eris—the snubbed goddess of discord, who has been forbidden to attend the wedding banquet of Peleus and the sea nymph Thetis—interrupts the feast of the Olympian gods by tossing down a golden apple as a prize for the most beautiful goddess, thereby inducing a quarrel.
