It has just turned five o¿clock in the morning, and the coachman is waiting impatiently for the young man to take leave of his beloved. This and the other four paintings by Spitzweg in the Schack-Galerie are among the artist¿s best documented and best preserved: he entered them together with their buyer¿s name in his register of sales, and they have been spared later alterations. Together, they form a remarkable group of works, showing the painter at the height of his powers.
