Lenbach’s painting shows a view of the Alhambra palace across the Darro valley. The Torre de Comares can be seen on the left, followed to the right by the palace of Emperor Charles V. The older part of the palace ranges across the right half of the hilltop, flanked by the Torre della Reina and the Torre della Vela. The snow-covered Sierra Nevada appears in the background. Schack saw the Moorish royal palace as a potent symbol of the Iberian peninsula’s Arabian and Islamic past.
