The video installation EMPIRE shows a queen wasp building – at first alone, later with her workers – a nest and laying her eggs. Recorded over the course of 90 days entirely from the same angle as a single unedited shot, the film shows in real time how the small wasp nest grows, comb by comb.
Pfeiffer developed the experimental set-up together with wasp specialist Robert W. Matthews in a specially built box. The artwork’s running time – unusually long for a piece of video art – deliberately challenges the viewing behaviour and perception of time of the spectators, who, during their museum visit, will only ever see a fraction of the 90-day-long growth process.
