A shepherd’s family is resting at a well set in a Mediterranean landscape with ancient ruins, pine trees and cypresses. Together with ‘Rural Idyll’ (facing, at the other end of the room) this picture originally belonged to a four-part decorative cycle of paintings. The other works are preserved in other museums; they depict the ‘Return from the Market’ and a ‘Contented Fisherman’. The series of pictures was created following Boucher’s return from his stay in Italy.
