Despite his reduced palette, Van Goyen succeeded in effectively capturing the atmosphere of a typical Dutch river landscape with its cottages, barns, dovecotes, and hayricks along the riverbank as well as the barges, washerwomen, and fishermen, which are only noticeable on second glance.
