The hardworking and virtuous hunter (see inv. no. 248), returning home with plenty of game, is moralizingly juxtaposed with the lax idleness of the sleeping woman. After 1680 Weenix specialised in animal and hunt still lifes. From 1702 onwards he was in the service of the Elector of Düsseldorf Johann Wilhelm.
