Philip IV’s royal status manifests itself here not in outward trappings – he is wearing plain hunting dress – but in his pose and facial expression, which embody personal qualities and values. Velázquez painted the original portrait for the Galeria del Rey in the royal hunting lodge of Torre de la Parada near Madrid. Lenbach copied it in the Prado during his stay in Madrid.
