This pastel depicts the successor to the French throne (known in French as Dauphin), Louis of France, the son of Louis XIV, who since the birth of his own first son in 1682 became known as Grand Dauphin. Vivien depicts him as a military commander with the sash of the Order of the Holy Spirit across his chest, which was the birthright of French princes.
